Typical File Formats

EPS

Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) is a standard file format for importing and exporting PostScript files. It is usually a single page PostScript program that describes an illustration or an entire page.
An EPS file can contain any combination of text, graphics and images. Since it is actually a PostScript file, it is the most versatile file format that is available. EPS-files usually contain a small preview image that is used to visualize the content of the file. Even office applications such as Microsoft Word can display the preview image. There are millions of people working with *.eps files without realising how complex the artwork they are using really is.

JPG & Gif

Jpegs & gifs are preferred formats for use on the internet, jpegs for their small size and good picture quality, and gifs for supporting transparency & animation.

Tiff

For images destined for print the fundamental requirement is good color support. It is by providing this that the TIFF format, with its support for RGB, Lab and especially CMYK color models, established itself. Photographic images are unlikely to be printed directly from their originating bitmap editor, but instead must fit into a wider print-oriented workflow.

PSD

Increasingly then image edit ability is becoming important. The obvious way of maintaining maximum information and maximum editability is to stick with the native application-specific format. Of course it was to avoid this go-it-alone anarchy that file format standards had to be developed in the first place, but the situation with bitmap images is quite special. Currently the vast majority of designers are working on their images in Photoshop and then exporting them to TIFF to use in their DTP application. Why not just cut out the middleman and support the industry standard Photoshop’s PSD format directly? .

AI

This is the original artwork as saved in the native illustrator format. This format is usually preferred printed items and is editable if changes are required.
